Hard Road Trio

Hard Road Trio

Original Southwestern acoustic
blend of Americana and Bluegrass
music from the wide-open
spaces of New Mexico

Mandolinist Steve Smith, guitarist/vocalist Chris Sanders and bassist Anne Luna are three songwriters who have found their collective voice in the light and air of the Southwest. The Trio's roots extend into old time, jazz, country and modern chamber music, the product of over 30 years of performing. "The Trio has the kind of empathic harmony that comes from deep listening and familiarity (as in "familial")," says Bruce Bergathon, host of WGLT's Acousticity.

2012 brought The Hard Road Trio’s release of Monticello which spent most of the summer in the top 5 of the Cashbox Roots chart. Thanks to the folks at The Art of the Song, River City Folk, and Folk Scene for having us on your shows. Check these websites for archived shows and stations playing these interviews and live performances. (Folk Scene will broadcast on Jan. 6 – listen online at kpfk.org.)

About “Monticello”, the Trio’s new album:

Hard Road Trio - MonticelloFor two weeks in October of 2011 we set up a studio in a century-old adobe in Monticello NM. Our dynamo of a producer/engineer, James McLaughlin, flew out from Virginia and set up his control booth in the kitchen while we recorded in the meeting room enclosed in Steve’s custom-built gobos (moveable acoustic isolation panels). Without the distraction of cell phones or email, free to enjoy the scent of lavender, the taste of green chile and the serenade of coyotes, we created this album in the beauty of old New Mexico.

Steve, Chris and Anne

Guest appearances by Michael Witcher, Nate Lee, Tim May and Bill Evans.
